Candles, diffusers, stones, and lava

In 2020, there was nothing more eloquently indicating changes in consumer preferences than the growing popularity of home fragrances. As the pandemic spread across continents, fragrances that created a cosy atmosphere and calmed the nerves became a hit in the perfume market. Three years later, ambiance has become a true mainstream trend: in 2023, candles and diffusers are being produced not only by major brands such as Byredo, Le Labo, and Loewe, but also by mass-market brands and small artisanal manufacturers. Today, we will tell you about the different types of room fragrances that can help you relax or energize for productive work in a home office, create a cosy atmosphere at home, or set a romantic mood.

Spray

Transforming your own home into a summer garden, autumn forest, or hot seaside coast is extremely easy – just purchase a room spray. You will instantly feel its aroma, but it will not last long – no more than four hours. However, one spray is usually enough – sprays are typically moderately concentrated. A small bottle will last for a couple of months if not overused.

There are not as many home fragrance sprays on the cosmetic market as there are diffusers and candles, but Zielinski & Rozen and Photogenics + Co have clearly excelled in this field. Diffusers

Spaces in which we often find ourselves should be comfortable not only visually but also aromatically because properly chosen scents can create the desired atmosphere for different occasions. For example, lavender has a calming effect and prepares for sleep, while orange blossoms are invigorating.

The advantage of a regular diffuser is that it is quite "strong," and its scent spreads throughout the entire flat. The intensity can be adjusted: the more reeds in the vase, the stronger the scent. The duration of the effect depends on the size of the bowl and the consistency of the oil. A small, liquid diffuser, about the size of a children's juice box, will last for about three weeks. An oil-based fragrance will last longer as it absorbs more slowly.

Scented candles

Everyone knows that watching a burning fire quickly calms and helps get rid of intrusive thoughts. For those who don't have a fireplace, a suitable alternative is aromatic candles, especially those with a wooden wick instead of the usual cotton wick: it burns more intensely and emits a characteristic cosy sound. Candles made of soy or palm wax are completely natural candles. Such candles do not emit soot and harmful substances, unlike artificial wax: it generates a significant amount of carbon dioxide when burned, which makes such products dangerous to human health and the environment.

Lava rocks

Diffusers with volcanic stones decorate and scent the interior, and unlike candles, they don't need to be heated or lit. The lava undergoes a special treatment to retain the necessary amount of fragrance, gradually releasing it and providing a pleasant background scent to the room for 3–4 months. Over time, the fragrance will gradually fade. It can be refreshed with a special refill, which is provided as part of the diffuser set. It can be stored in a metal jar or transferred to a favourite vase or vessel. You can distribute it in different parts and rooms, or use it for scenting your car. The jar can be closed with a lid at any time, thereby pausing the evaporation and scenting process. Fragrance stones

Special stones made of white clay or plaster, infused with essential oil, are one of the unique but popular forms of ambiance. As the aroma evaporates, a few more drops can be added to the surface. Depending on the size of the stone, any space can be scented, from a purse to an entire office.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is used in healing, meditation practices, and is commonly found in Ayurveda and yoga practices. They are also suitable for simply filling the air with pleasant aromas. Moreover, it is the most affordable way to fragrance a space, and it can also be the most beautiful if you choose an appropriate holder. Some of the ingredients even possess antibacterial properties and have a positive impact on mental well-being. For example, Palo Santo grows in the wild in Peru and is ethically produced from fallen trees and branches. Before harvesting, they remain on the ground for 5–8 years to accumulate valuable resins and essential oils, which is why they are highly valued. Additionally, Kuumba offers classic aromatherapy with unique fragrances that will appeal to those who prefer complex combinations of perfume components.

Armenian paper

Papier d'Arménie, also known as Armenian paper or perfumed paper, was invented in France in the late 19th century. It first appeared in 1885. The main function of Armenian paper, which is impregnated with resins and Eastern spices, is to eliminate unpleasant odours. To do this, it needs to be heated. The main ingredient is benzoin resin, a natural substance obtained from incisions made in the bark of trees belonging to the Styrax family, which has a vanilla-like scent with a spicy undertone.

Wax ovals

Another form of home fragrances is aromatic porcelain ovals filled with wax. They are perfect for the bathroom, as the scent will not be too intense in humid conditions, which is often the case with diffusers. They last for about four months. Such unique scented accessories are still relatively rare, but you can find them from the brand Diptyque.
